Centralia, Pennsylvania

Today Rae and I took a little roadtrip to Centralia, PA.

Centralia was a coal mining town in Pennsylvania until the mine caught fire in the 1960's and the coal has been burning ever since. We didn't actually find the town (which was supposedly lilke nearby Ashland) because we ran out of sun and time, but we did find an abandoned highway that must lead to Centralia proper. After walking a few hundred yards we found a section of highway that had swells, bulges, and cracks in it. Out of the cracks wafted smoke from the coal fires underground.

Enjoy. X-posted rural_ruin.
